Construction 'champion' wins industry backing

Leading figures in the construction industry have backed the Government’s decision to create a "construction champion" chief advisor role, a position designed to promote innovation and sustainability in the sector whilst ensuring competitiveness. The Chief Construction Advisor will be tasked with overseeing best value Government construction procurement; chairing an enhanced sustainability construction strategy board; helping to develop low carbon improvements in the industry; and working with the industry through the Strategic Forum for Construction, among other duties.

"This role will provide a central 'focal point' for the construction sector acknowledging the value of this sector and the importance of delivering a sustainable and low carbon economy that remains competitive," said Ian Pearson, Economic Secretary. "The Chief Construction Adviser will help ensure that Government secures maximum value for money in its procurement of construction and thus support the aims of the Operational Efficiency Programme".

"The construction industry has been crying out for a strong and effective champion to fight its corner," said Confederation of British Industry (CBI) President John McDonough. RIBA President Sunand Prasad has also expressed support for the creation of the role, calling it a "positive step forward".

It is expected that the new chief advisor will be appointed in November, according to comments from Ian Lucas, Business Minister with Responsibility for Construction.
