Greener buildings pledge wins support

Recently announced Government proposals to change Part L of the Building Regulations in order to achieve better energy efficiency have won support from industry figures. The changes, detailed by Housing Minister John Healey, would boost energy efficiency by 25% on current standards in homes and commercial buildings from October 2010.

“We must build our homes to a better, greener standard. We are leading the way globally, with our ambitions for zero-carbon homes and buildings,” said the Housing Minister, launching a consultation on the issue at the RTPI planning conference. “The next step towards zero carbon – a 25% improvement on current standards for new homes or buildings from 2010.”

While the residential element of the announcement was expected, as it forms part of the existing Code for Sustainable Homes, the non-domestic building aspect was largely unexpected. Despite this, the proposal was welcomed by industry.

“It’s time for planners, architects and developers to step up the mark and respond to this challenge,” added Robert Upton, Secretary-General of the RTPI.
